With increasing information diverting attention and longer commutes causing greater fatigue, safe operation of vehicles is a growing concern, as we move toward fully autonomous vehicles. The concept of workload management in the operation of vehicles is driving the automotive industry to address these issues. This session will discuss two primary technologies that will realize the objectives of workload management. Driver State Monitoring (DSM) and Gesture Recognition (GS) systems are being implemented into production vehicles on a rapid and urgent path. The impact of these technologies on driver fatigue and safety will be demonstrated. Subsystem architecture and the integration of DSM/GS subsystems into vehicle architecture will be illustrated. Sensor technologies, image ecognition/processing, and decision logic will be detailed. Finally, the state of these technologies, their current limitations, and development roadmaps will be discussed.
